Mike thought for a moment, after hearing about trainee MAF Pilot James. ‘I love the feeling of soaring around in the sky. It’s like being a bird! It’s amazing to see the world from above, and to see the clouds up close.’
‘And I like the rainbows,’ said Foxtrot happily, remembering the times he’d flown in a plane. ‘I always think of the Bible verse when God said that it was a sign of His love for the earth – “I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” That’s Genesis 9:13, I believe.’
‘I bet they get a lot of rainbows in Liberia,’ smiled Alpha. ‘Monrovia is the wettest capital city in the world. Do you do aircraft maintenance in that country sometimes, Foxtrot?’
‘Yes, I do,’ the fox replied, ‘It’s quite a challenge for MAF pilots to fly in that weather. They have to fly around the rainstorms, and always need to be extra careful when landing, too.
‘I help install special radar screens in our planes so that the pilots can see what the weather is doing further along their route and be prepared. I’ve got a video on my phone from my friend Steven in Liberia, looking at a stormy day on his radar.’
‘It’s really useful, isn’t it?’ Alpha responded. ‘I’m glad we have radar. Did you know that a rainbow is actually completely round?’
‘What?’ exclaimed Mike.
‘Yes, we normally only see half of a rainbow, as it meets the horizon. But if you go higher than we pilots usually fly, you’d be able to see the whole rainbow,’ explained Alpha.
‘Well, I never knew that,’ said Mike, grinning with excitement. He loved learning new things.
