As the friends finished their starters, Alpha looked out of the restaurant window. ‘Oh no! It’s pouring with rain now. Where has the sun gone?’ she said.

‘At least when it rains here, it’s only for a day or two. We only get a few puddles and we can safely go inside and wait until it stops,’ replied Mike. ‘When I was flying with MAF in Suriname – that’s a place in South America – they had just had unusually heavy rainfall, causing a big flood.’

Mike continued, ‘As people live by the riverbanks and plant their vegetables near the water in Suriname, the flood had caused destroyed all the crops and damaged homes and school buildings.

‘People grow cassava, which is their main food source, so it caused a really big problem for the people getting enough to eat. To help, we joined with Suriname’s disaster response agency to give out emergency food to the most isolated people cut off by the floods.’

‘What food did you bring them?’ asked Foxtrot, intrigued.

‘I flew to many different places, each with around 30 sacks of food containing rice, potatoes, canned vegetables, cooking oil and onions – enough to make basic meals. We helped over 200 families in need!’ said Mike.

‘That’s amazing, what a blessing that food must have been to those people,’ replied Foxtrot.

‘It’s like the Bible tells us in the book of Isaiah, “Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble,” which is exactly what MAF do when they respond to disasters like these floods!’ said Alpha, taking a sip of her drink. ‘Oh, look guys, the rain is easing off now!’ she smiled.
